Potted plants are a simple and impactful way of enhancing your home, garden or office space. They add colour, texture and a focal point to your spaces and unlike cut flowers potted plants will stay lush all year round. There are a few design principals to consider when styling your potted greenery. Here are our top tips.
1. Choose the right pot
Size matters – select a pot that is slightly larger than the root ball. If it’s too small growth will be restricted and if it’s too large the soil can become soggy. Consider your style preference too. Terracotta adds warmth and a Mediterranean feel. Ceramic pots are an opportunity to introduce colour and pattern, and metal and concrete vessels give a modern edge. If you are after a softer look, you can also consider woven baskets.
Always ensure your pots have drainage holes so your plants don’t become waterlogged.
2. Try different heights and shapes
Group similar pots of different heights or mix round, square and organic shaped pots for a more eclectic style. This will prevent groupings from becoming monotonous and construct a layered aesthetic that has more visual depth - and a dynamic and engaging space for you to enjoy.
3. Consider the setting
If you are placing pots indoors you may want to work with your furnishing style. Minimalist ceramic pots work well with Scandi interiors and woven baskets are good if you are more of a Boho person. For the modernist try sleek black and white pots.
For outdoor use, hardy weather resistant pots are ideal. They look great in clusters near seating areas or entryways.
4. Use symmetry and asymmetry
For a formal aesthetic go for pairs, for example two identical pots flanking a doorway. Asymmetrical groupings of odd numbers such as 3 or 5 pots feel more relaxed and natural.
5. Don’t forget decorative touches
Dress your pots with a layer of pebbles, moss or woodchips to add interest or place them near ornamental objects including sculptures and outdoor lights.
Pots are quick way to give your outdoor or indoor space a lift. Don’t forget to choose hardy plants if you don’t want to fuss over upkeep.
