Re-imagining turf

Re-imagining turf

If you think beyond the standard lawn, there’s much you can do with turf to enhance functional and creative elements in your outdoor space. Turf is an excellent material for creating a designed surface where it can become part art, ecology and community space. Here are some ideas on how to incorporate it into your next project.

Artistic and sculptural purposes

Add interest to your garden by creating raised mounds or labyrinths, or construct a framed area of lawn using materials such as Corten steel, stone borders or hedges to make a living artwork.

If you are working in a public space, turfing areas such as amphitheatres create a comfortable, natural cushion for sitting or picnicking on, replacing the need for chairs.

Sustainable turfing

By integrating turfing with stormwater design, you can create rain gardens, swales and sponge lawns. Consider a clover-integrated turf blended through buffalo or zoysia that will naturally fix nitrogen and create a greener all-year-round turf that requires less fertiliser. Turfing also acts as a natural air-conditioner – great for urban areas with a lot of concrete.

Seasonal meadow corners

Identify an area of your lawn that you would like to mow less, such as a steep bank or underneath trees. Plant a blend of turf, native daisies or kangaroo grass for a seasonal surprise.  Meadow corners will also provide your garden with a biodiversity boost, introducing pollinators and habitat for insects and birds. You will only need to mow this area after the flowering season (often late spring or autumn). Remove the clippings or leave as mulch, depending on the species.

Green roof turfing

Green roof turfing can be stunning, but it only works long-term if the structure beneath it is designed to cope with weight, water, and root systems.

The combination of turf, soil and water can reach 250–500 kg/m² and more when wet. Flat or very gently sloped roofs are most practical. Steel, reinforced concrete, or engineered timber can all work if designed for the load.

Green roofing is a fabulous way to insulate buildings (cooler in summer, warmer in winter), reduce storm water runoff and blend structures seamlessly into the landscape. They also create a bonus space or viewing platform for entertaining. You may also need to consult with your local council or a structural engineer to ensure your green roof construction complies with all relevant local authority regulations.
