Recycle garden waste by turning it into wood chips

If you have a big pruning project and want to finish it quickly, you can’t go past the Hansa C21 woodchipper. This world-class chipper features an extremely heavy-duty cutting disc with a capacity to chip up to 130mm in diameter. With an inlet chute specifically designed to assist in feeding heavier branches and foliage, it makes light work of an otherwise labour-intensive job.

How to use wood chips

Use wood chips as garden mulch to suppress weeds and help retain moisture. Over time, they break down, adding organic matter to the soil. They also make great garden paths and are a good source of carbon for compost piles. It is important not to mix them with the soil but to apply them as a top layer to avoid nitrogen lockup.

Let your chips age before applying

This vital process ensures that any phytotoxic compounds are broken down, so your plants won’t be poisoned. Place your fresh wood chips in a pile and leave them to weather for three or four months.

Mulching

Apply a layer of wood chips (5-10 cm) around your plants, avoiding direct contact with the stems, which can lead to fungal diseases. If you use wood chips in vegetable beds, consider adding nitrogen to balance the carbon.

Pathways

Wood chips make attractive, easy-to-walk-on paths and are not slippery in wet weather. Place a layer of cardboard under the wood chips to prevent weeds, and then add the wood chips (8-12 cm).

Compost

Add some woodchips to your compost pile. They are an excellent carbon source and will help create a balanced mix of carbon and nitrogen. Add them in layers, alternating with green materials such as grass clippings or leaves.
