In our climate, mulching isn’t optional - it’s essential. In the Northern Rivers, heat, humidity, heavy rainfall, and sudden dry spells can be tough on your garden. A protective layer of mulch helps reduce evaporation, suppress weeds, and improve soil as it breaks down. You will be rewarded with lush summer growth, and your plants will thank you, too.
Choose the right mulch for subtropical conditions
Pine bark and cypress chip mulches are long-lasting and ideal for garden beds. They are durable, tidy, and versatile, performing well in warm, humid, high rainfall climates. This chunky material handles heavy rain well, so it is less likely to float or wash away during a summer downpour. These mulches are available in small, medium, and large grades to suit a range of purposes, from neat garden beds to larger landscaped areas.
Tea tree mulch is long-lasting, meaning you don’t have to top up so frequently. It is naturally pest-resistant and may help deter some insects and fungal issues. Tea tree mulch’s coarse texture also makes it an ideal weed suppressant. Its attractive, natural finish suits native and coastal gardens.
If you are after a lightweight option, sugarcane mulch is easy to apply and perfect for veggie gardens. If you want to add organic matter and encourage beneficial microbes and earthworms, it is a great choice as it breaks down faster than other mulches. It is lightweight and clean, making it popular with home gardeners.
How deep should mulch be?
The depth of your mulch layer is important, especially in hot weather. If it’s too thin, it won’t protect the soil, and too much mulch can trap moisture against plant stems, causing rot. Typically, garden beds require 50-75mm, and trees need up to 100mm, but be careful not to put the bark where it touches the trunk. Veggie gardens require 40-60mm.
A well-mulched garden is a great investment in our climate. It improves soil health, protects plants from heat waves, and keeps your garden looking tidy and well-kept.
